We spend one third of our lives sleeping and it's no wonder that there are so many great words we use instead of sleep in English. By learning them, you can be more specific about the way that you describe your sleep. We also use heaps of expressions related to sleep that can be confusing if you don't know them. Show notes here.

BB 8: How to Achieve your Full Potential with Philosophy, Reflection and English Fluency | Leo Gomez
Leo Gomez, founder of Learn your English (.net), is an ESL teacher, trainer and entrepreneur. He has more than 20 years of teaching experience and has taught English in six different countries. Leo believes that individuals develop through reflection, experimentation and learning from their mistakes. Amazingly, he hasn't used the course book to teach in more than seven years. Leo emigrated from Brazil to Canada, where he started his business called Learn Your English. Through courses, masterclasses and two podcasts, Leo and his business partners work to build a language community for both instructors and learners to become more autonomous and effective.
I had a great time talking to Leo - at moments I felt so engrossed in the conversation that I forgot we were recording it. We have a lot in common. We started out discussing philosophy, journaling and meditation. Then we talked about Leo's journey to achieve native-level English. We also touched on the challenges to teaching English as a non-native in Canada, and how he overcame them. He shared all sorts of insights for English learners, like "the seven C's of English learning", and the role of purpose and learning a language. That's not all, Leo, also gave tips for teachers, and how you can stop depending on a textbook. We got into learner autonomy, why this is so important, and how teachers can promote it. Shannon Kennedy, from eurolinguiste.com, is an American entrepreneur, content creator, language learner and musician based in California. She's a language expert and writer on various language learning platforms, such as Fluent in 3 Months and Drops, where she shares tips and challenges to help learners apply the concepts of minimalism to maximize their efficiency. Shannon is also a professional jazz musician and started studying European languages, such as Spanish, Italian and German while taking her Master's Degree in Musicology. I just am absolutely blown away by Shannon's ability to study 5+ languages simultaneously on top of working, running her own project, and spending time with family. That said, this interview will give you tons of ideas for how you can improve your skills in English or start learning another language, even if you are very busy and have hardly any time. Shannon told me about some of her favorite tools and systems that she uses to organize her learning in all of her different languages. There's a lot here that I want to try applying to my own learning, and I'm sure you will, too. She discusses why motivation is not important, and what actually is really essential. Shannon, like myself, is an introvert, and we discussed tips that can help you speak languages even if you are shy or introverted. She shared how you can get the most out of your course book and other resources. We also talked about what fluency is. I found her answer pretty surprising and fascinating. So there is a ton of useful information in this interview—you may want to grab a pen and paper! Now ladies and gents, let's get into episode 7 of Beyond Borders. Show notes here.

We discussed her feeling depressed the first time that she lived outside of the United States, and the importance of having a support network. Also why going to an English speaking country will not be the magic pill to help you speak fluently. It was interesting hearing her perspectives on culture shock and reverse culture shock when returning to the USA. Christina also gave advice for English teachers to stay relevant in 2021 and beyond. Today we have a very special podcast where we take a trip down memory lane (remember the past) and talk about expressions that we used to say as kids. These are funny playground expressions, some of which you've probably heard in kid shows or in family movies. As you’ll see the vocabulary and the language can be quite interesting, even philosophical, in some of these. Don’t miss out! Show notes here.
