The RealLife English Podcast
Are you tired of boring, slow-speaking English lessons that don't teach you the way that natives really speak? Do you wanna learn how English is spoken in the real world? In this podcast, Ethan, Andrea, and Justin—your American and British Fluency Coaches will take you beyond the classroom and help you live, learn, and SPEAK English in the real world through fun, natural, conversational lessons that will rapidly teach you: - To understand fast-speaking natives - The vocabulary, phrasal verbs, idioms, and slang that you actually need to know - Native pronunciation and connected speech (how we natives cut and connect our words in a predictable way) - American and British English and their differences Above all, we'll help you develop the mindset, the method, and the mastery to live your English in the real world!

As language learners, we often strive for perfect pronunciation, because how we sound is the first thing people hear when we speak. We’re afraid that if we make a mistake, especially when it comes to pronunciation, our value will diminish and others will realize that we’re not as good as we say we are. But let’s be honest, in many cases, English pronunciation makes no sense! In English, spelling and sound don’t always correspond (in fact, they rarely do!). Worry no more! In today’s lesson, our Beyond Borders guests will share some of the best methods you can use to improve your pronunciation. Get ready to be inspired!

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Did you try to read that out loud? Did you find it hard? That’s a tongue twister. They usually have the same sounding consonants, so when you try to say each word the pronunciation comes out all wrong. Tongue twisters are a fun and great way to practice your articulation and your pronunciation. They challenge your capacity to enunciate the individual sounds in each word, so you don’t trip up and forces you to pay careful attention to the precise sounds in each word. Join us in this fun lesson where Ethan, Andrea and yourself are put to the test with 6 tricky tongue twisters!

Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology and author originally from Germany. She has been teaching at New York University and the University of Hamburg for more than 20 years. Her research focuses on the Science of Motivation and explains why positive thinking alone is not enough to achieve our goals. Upon more than 25 years of research, she developed a goal-achievement strategy called WOOP. WOOP stands for WISH, OUTCOME, OBSTACLE, and PLAN. This empirically based approach focuses on helping people connect to their biggest wishes, clarify the desired outcome, identify the obstacles that may stand in the way, and set a realistic plan in just ten minutes or less!

I first heard about Gabriele's work three years ago, and I found it immensely helpful for setting goals. This time of year, many of us are thinking about what new objectives we want to achieve, so I was so thrilled to be able to get Gabriele on. With Gabriele's advice, you can make this the year that you actually achieve some of your deepest desires, be it English fluency, weight loss, better health, a new job, or even less anxiety! Gabriele shared with me a bit about how she ended up in the USA and some surprising cultural differences. Whether she still finds it challenging communicating in English. Why the advice to be optimistic or think positive may not always be to your benefit. How you can use WOOP to identify the right goals for this new year and actually achieve them. When you should use WOOP to be most successful and plenty of examples. How we can deal with risk aversion. How you can use WOOP to be a better parent. So much more. I'm so excited to bring you Gabriele's work and wisdom, I hope you find it as helpful as I have. Let's jump into episode 23 of Beyond Borders!
