Feeling the need to improve ourselves is a positive thing! You don’t want to just spend your life lazing about on the couch. Whether intentional or not, we, as humans, are always learning. However, this competitive spirit is not always a positive thing. And in this episode, we dive deep into why it'd be a good idea to re-think your competitive spirit if it has a negative, paralyzing effect.

You've probably been through a situation where you either needed to say a word, but you couldn't remember it, or that you had to speak in English but simply didn't know how to say something even though you know it perfectly in your own language. I totally know how you feel. When I was learning Hebrew, I found it so complicated because virtually every word was completely different from the equivalent in English. I had to think so hard to put together a sentence because the vocabulary did not come naturally to me. So, to help you (and me!), this lesson brings 3 experts' easy and practical tips to improve your vocabulary. Each of them has learned at least five foreign languages, so trust me that they have a LOT of experience learning A LOT of words.

Today we're talking all about abbreviations in English. In case you're not familiar with this term, an abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. For example, we might say FYI instead of "for your information" or ASAP instead of "As soon as possible." You'll come across abbreviations in your work, studies, and general daily life. They're a huge part of communication, especially when texting or sending online messages or emails. In this podcast, we'll clarify the various types of abbreviations and also teach you some of the most common ones.

"My weakness? Well, I'd say I'm a bit of a perfectionist." How many times have you heard someone saying that or have even said that yourself? It's quite common to repeat this over and over as an excuse to not take the next step towards a goal or a dream that you have.

Now, you may be thinking "But Ethan, I am proud of myself for being a perfectionist because it means that I care deeply about the things I do." I understand why you might believe that calling yourself a perfectionist makes you feel that you work hard(er) than others to achieve the things you want to do. And there is some truth in that. However, our admiration for perfection is so universal that we never really stop to question what this concept is doing to you and your language learning journey.

Gabriel Wyner is an American polyglot, book author, and founder of Fluent Forever. He fell in love with language learning while training to be an opera singer at school. After feeling pressured by a deadline to achieve proficiency in French, he worked his way to fluency studying on his own. Noticing that there was valuable advice online that was not put together, Gabe decided to share his journey in the book Fluent Forever: How to Learn Any Language Fast and Never Forget It, which since has become a best-seller. Since 2019, he and his team have been helping thousands of people with their language learning through their Fluent Forever app. Their mission is to enable a million people to have comfortable conversations in a foreign language by 2030.

This interview with Gabe was absolutely fascinating. It left me with so many questions, I only wish we could have talked longer. The interview starts a little bit slow, but trust me, stick in there through the whole interview for a goldmine of life-changing language learning advice. Gabe shares with me about his childhood and how his parents instilled a growth mindset in him from an early age. How a coming of age ceremony led him to become an opera singer and study vocal arts. Why goals are a crucial part of his language learning and how he sets effective objectives. How learning another foreign language might help you better learn English. The brain science that goes into making the fluent forever method effective, and how you can learn pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in an efficient and natural way. You are really in for a treat with this one—it could change the way you think about language learning. I'm so excited to share this interview with you, so let's get into episode 19 of Beyond Borders!

Natasha Broodie is an American communication specialist and founder of Life with the big E. She's a diplomat who previously worked with the United Nations. She is also a travel and language enthusiast and has lived in Russia and France where she taught Business English and noticed how non-native speakers interacted in multicultural business contexts. This experience led her to write her new book "Give Me Tea, Please" to help students politely navigate formal and informal conversations in English-speaking business environments. I loved how different this interview is from any of the Beyond Borders shows so far. Natasha brings a great energy.

She shares what she learned from studying a masters in International Relations and doing humanitarian work in western Africa. And why negotiation is such an important skill, even in learning English. We dive into what you need to do to really stand out in a job interview in English and how you can prepare, even if it is tomorrow! Natasha shares how she has learned to tolerate and become comfortable with rejection, which will definitely help any of you listening. We get into why you might be at risk of being left behind in this globalizing world. You are probably using the simple words YOU, WHAT, and WANT. Natasha tells you how to avoid making a big mistake with these words. Her advice for starting to learn a new language. So let's not waste anymore time getting into episode 18 of Beyond Borders!

Idioms are a type of figurative language which can be very confusing for English language learners. Now, there are tons of expressions that use animals and we use them all the time. Luke Thompson is an ESL Teacher, Podcaster, and Stand-up Comedian. He's originally from England and currently lives in Paris. Luke has been helping learners practice their listening skills for over 10 years through his podcast. His webpage and podcast were voted #1 in the Best Blog category for the Macmillan Dictionaries Awards four times in a row. His goals are to engage the learners with authentic conversations that explore all different aspects of everyday life and bits of British culture.

Luke is quite the polymath, meaning he has a broad knowledge and many different skills and passions, and he is an absolute delight to speak with. He explains to me what it's like living in Paris, what a perfect day there might look like, and how he has overcome culture shock. We talk about what stand-up comedy, rock climbing, surfing, and swimming all have in common with learning English or another language. Why "I'm too old" is a bad excuse for not learning a language. How he finds time for all of his different work, hobbies, family, and passions, and how you can make more time for your own learning. If you're like most English learners, you've probably heard the word 'ass' used very frequently in English speaking in songs, movies, and TV series. But did you know that this word has a multitude of uses that mean completely different things? Although you should definitely be very careful with all uses of this word, often the use can in fact, be neutral or even positive. While it's important to emphasize that we do need to be careful with this word, this does not mean we should ignore it. If you close your mind to this important word, and all of its meanings, and never learn how native speakers use it, you will miss so much. Now, ladies and gents, episode #254 of the RealLife English Podcast…

Ladies and gentlemen. English learners, teachers, and world changers. My next guest is Tiffani. Tiffani, from speakenglishwithtiffani.com, is a teacher and artist from Maryland, US. One day, she left her job as a web designer at NASA to embark on an adventure to South Korea. She lived there for almost 10 years and fell in love with teaching English as a Second Language. Since founding the Speak English with Tiffani Academy, she's dedicated her time and energy to help learners from all around the world develop the confidence they need to speak and communicate in English. Through her Youtube Channel, podcast and app, she helps people to learn English in a simple and playful way.

This conversation was so much fun—I don't think I have ever laughed this much during an interview. Tiffani has such amazing energy and is really an incredible teacher. We cover lessons Tiffani learned growing up and from her parents: Where her diligence, creativity, discipline, and entrepreneurial spirit come from. She shared with me how she got up the courage to leave a comfortable job at NASA by getting in touch with her purpose to help more people.

Tiffani told me how she broke out of the intermediate level of Korean by stopping to learn grammar and start playing with the language. She told you how you can do the same, and most importantly, how you can gain confidence. We also touched on the lack of diversity on YouTube when it comes to English teachers, and why if you have ever thought of teaching English online, you should give it a go. And so, so much more. So let's not wait any longer to get into this inspiring and hilarious conversation with Tiffani, on episode 15 of Beyond Borders!

For those of you in Brazil, you will be no stranger to today's guest, but if you don't know him, you are in for a treat! Gavin Roy is from Ohio in the USA. He learned Portuguese to go to Brazil for the FIFA Soccer World Cup. On his YouTube channels: SmallAdvantages (with 2.7 million subscribers) and TadyGavin he teaches English through his own journey of learning Portuguese and Czech respectively.

I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. I'm absolutely amazed by Gavin's motivation to accomplish so much, on top of running a business and raising children. I feel seriously inspired from this conversation. We discussed how he has gained mastery in Portuguese without ever living in Brazil. He explained how he creates a Brazilian life in Colorado, and even speaks exclusively to his son in Portuguese (both he and his wife are American). How visualization is a powerful tool for him to speak three different foreign languages. Why "I don't have time" is not a real excuse, and what you can do if you are someone who feels like they are always too busy. Gavin told me about the role of passion, dedication, and goals in being successful learning languages and guitar. Gavin considers himself a huge perfectionist, he explained how he has become comfortable with making mistakes when he learns a language. If you feel scared to start a conversation, you will get some great advice on how to reprogram your brain to get started speaking English or another language you want to learn. And tons and tons more insights! So get ready for a super fun and inspiring conversation with Gavin Roy on episode 14 of Beyond Borders!

My guest today is Veronika Mark, a language learner and YouTuber from Russia. On her YouTube channel, English with Veronika Mark, she shares the tips she applied on her own journey learning English for the past 6 years. Veronika speaks English and Chinese fluently, and also some French. She approaches a variety of topics, such as how you can keep motivated to learn English, where to find resources to enhance your learning experiences, and what to learn to go from intermediate to advanced.

I'm excited to bring you another story of success from an English learner. A crucial resource for Veronika to overcome her self-consciousness speaking English and communicate confidently was an English Speaking Club in Moscow, where she lives. She shared why this is so effective and how you can find one in your city. We discussed some of her essential routines, including bullet journaling, doing Yoga videos in English, and listening to podcasts and why it is so important that you create a language learning environment for yourself. She shared how to avoid getting stuck and continue expanding your knowledge of English once you are at an advanced level. She tells me about how it is different teaching her native language and teaching English. Her top piece of advice for learners is to have clear goals for your learning. She explains why. And so much more coming up in episode 13 of Beyond Borders!

Idahosa Ness is a polyglot, musician, and founder of The Mimic Method for learning languages. After traveling to Mexico at the age of 17 without knowing a word of Spanish, and struggling to connect with locals, he worked hard to perfect his accent by understanding the sonority of the language. He created The Mimic Method and used this approach to learn five other languages. He is oftentimes mistaken as a native speaker of the languages he has learned. Since then, he has helped lots of students to use principles of music to perfect their pronunciation in order to help them overcome the language barriers while building meaningful relationships in a foreign language.

Idahosa has created a truly revolutionary method for learning languages. It is probably the exact opposite of how you have been told to learn English your entire life. I truly recommend you listen to this episode until the end, If you can take some notes, and try at least one of his recommendations. Idahosa explains how he reactivates a language when he needs to start using it again. We talked about his unique approach for learning vocabulary, which is completely personalized to the learner's needs and goals. As well as why you don't need to worry about learning grammar. Idahosa says that awareness is foundational. It can help you to overcome fear, awkwardness, and frustration when speaking. He explains how. He discussed how the international phonetic alphabet can be a useful tool to use to create a map of what accurate speaking and listening look like. And he explained why it is never too late to start using this method. No matter where you are on your learning journey, you can use his Mimic Method and the tips you are about to hear to improve your English listening and speaking. That and so much more on Episode 12 of Beyond Borders!

Justin Murray is the Co-founder and CEO of RealLife English. He's originally from the Seattle area in Washington State in the US but has been living in Brazil for more than 10 years. Justin and his business partners (including yours truly) started RealLife English as a series of face-to-face events to give their students the opportunity to practice speaking English through real-life conversations. The business grew into a global community with two very successful Youtube channels, a podcast, and a recently launched app designed to help learners like you to live your English. Justin believes that every learner is on a journey to become the best version of themselves and English is a powerful tool to achieve that. He dreams and works hard towards creating a world beyond borders in which global citizens connect through a common language.

Justin is my co-founder and a friend of mine, so we had a pretty fascinating conversation if I do say so myself! He recommends a couple of mind-blowing books that can change your life. Meditation and journaling are two crucial and fundamental daily habits of his, so we talked about why they are powerful and how you can get started if you're curious. Justin shared what running competitively in high school and college taught him about life and leadership, and how his parents taught him the value of short term pain for long term gain. We discussed how RealLife English got started with events. If you are a teacher or a learner that might like to start an English-speaking group in your city, you can get some helpful advice here. Justin also shared some tips and resources that can help you if you have ever wanted to give up, be it on learning English or any project or endeavor. And we played a fun new game that will get you laughing. That and so much more coming up on episode 10 of Beyond Borders! Download the App Here

Leo Gomez, founder of Learn your English (.net), is an ESL teacher, trainer and entrepreneur. He has more than 20 years of teaching experience and has taught English in six different countries. Leo believes that individuals develop through reflection, experimentation and learning from their mistakes. Amazingly, he hasn't used the course book to teach in more than seven years. Leo emigrated from Brazil to Canada, where he started his business called Learn Your English. Through courses, masterclasses and two podcasts, Leo and his business partners work to build a language community for both instructors and learners to become more autonomous and effective.

I had a great time talking to Leo - at moments I felt so engrossed in the conversation that I forgot we were recording it. We have a lot in common. We started out discussing philosophy, journaling and meditation. Then we talked about Leo's journey to achieve native-level English. We also touched on the challenges to teaching English as a non-native in Canada, and how he overcame them. He shared all sorts of insights for English learners, like "the seven C's of English learning", and the role of purpose and learning a language. That's not all, Leo, also gave tips for teachers, and how you can stop depending on a textbook. We got into learner autonomy, why this is so important, and how teachers can promote it. Shannon Kennedy, from eurolinguiste.com, is an American entrepreneur, content creator, language learner and musician based in California. She's a language expert and writer on various language learning platforms, such as Fluent in 3 Months and Drops, where she shares tips and challenges to help learners apply the concepts of minimalism to maximize their efficiency. Shannon is also a professional jazz musician and started studying European languages, such as Spanish, Italian and German while taking her Master's Degree in Musicology.

I just am absolutely blown away by Shannon's ability to study 5+ languages simultaneously on top of working, running her own project, and spending time with family. That said, this interview will give you tons of ideas for how you can improve your skills in English or start learning another language, even if you are very busy and have hardly any time. Shannon told me about some of her favorite tools and systems that she uses to organize her learning in all of her different languages. There's a lot here that I want to try applying to my own learning, and I'm sure you will, too. She discusses why motivation is not important, and what actually is really essential. Shannon, like myself, is an introvert, and we discussed tips that can help you speak languages even if you are shy or introverted. She shared how you can get the most out of your course book and other resources. We also talked about what fluency is. I found her answer pretty surprising and fascinating. So there is a ton of useful information in this interview—you may want to grab a pen and paper! Now ladies and gents, let's get into episode 7 of Beyond Borders. Show notes here.

Christina Lorimer, christinalorimer.com, is an English instructor, materials writer, academic consultant, and entrepreneur. She is a specialist in English as a second language and has worked with NGOs and immigrant refugees for many years. She dedicates her work to support language learners in overcoming internal and systemic barriers to become confident English speakers.

We talked about her experience helping immigrants in California to learn English and overcome strong emotional barriers, and her advice that could help you overcome your own limits to speak. We discussed her feeling depressed the first time that she lived outside of the United States, and the importance of having a support network. Also why going to an English speaking country will not be the magic pill to help you speak fluently. It was interesting hearing her perspectives on culture shock and reverse culture shock when returning to the USA. Christina also gave advice for English teachers to stay relevant in 2021 and beyond.

Her language journey started with Spanish, but Christina also speaks Brazilian Portuguese fluently. Through her Youtube Channel, she teaches English in Portuguese and helps learners just like you with their dream of learning English in a simple and fun way. Show notes here.

Today we have a very special podcast where we take a trip down memory lane (remember the past) and talk about expressions that we used to say as kids. These are funny playground expressions, some of which you've probably heard in kid shows or in family movies. As you’ll see the vocabulary and the language can be quite interesting, even philosophical, in some of these. Don’t miss out! Show notes here.

Jack Askew, tofluency.com and teachingeslonline.com, is an online ESL/EFL teacher, a web designer, and blogger. In 2008 he was offered a promotion at the marketing company he was working in, but he decided to quit and pursue his dream of traveling to South America instead. Since then he has been teaching English online and he has also worked in schools in Spain and Ecuador. He is originally from Preston in the United Kingdom, but he currently lives in the USA with his wife and two children. On his To Fluency YouTube Channel he helps learners to break out of intermediate and finally take their English to the C1 level and beyond. And on Teaching ESL Online he helps teachers to start their own business teaching independently online.

I will apologize ahead of time—I had some audio issues and so the quality is a little bit less than normal! But despite this, I highly urge you to listen to the whole episode because this was a dynamite conversation and there is great advice here for both English learners and teachers alike! In this week's podcast, we're talking all about connected speech! You'll learn about how we often don’t pronounce some words, how we reduce others and how we change some sounds in order to flow more naturally with our speech. This is a really interesting topic that will not only allow you to understand native English better, but you can also use this in your everyday speech too. At the end, we put ourselves to the test with the classic “Betty Botter bought some butter“ tongue twister. So, stick till the end to check that out and give it a go yourself! Show notes here.

In this episode of the show I had an amazing conversation with Hadar Shemesh, an incredibly skilled and insightful accent and fluency coach from Israel. She moved to NYC when she was 21 to pursue acting, where she worked as a bartender at a Jazz club to support herself. According to her, she used to get criticized because of her strong Israeli accent, but acting helped her become a "diligent speech student." We start off talking about how we can often feel uncomfortable speaking a foreign language because we can't express our identity, and her experience of this while living in New York. We discuss why it is less important than you think to speak like a native, and much more important to discover how to speak like yourself. We cover extensively about native-speakerism and discrimination towards English learners and non-native teachers, and how you can overcome imposter syndrome and share your passion with the world. No matter where you are on your language learning journey, whether you are a non-native teacher or a student, you will get a lot out of this interview. So, let's jump in! Show notes here.

She's an American English teacher who has over 3 million subscribers on her Speak English with Vanessa YouTube channel. In this episode of Beyond Borders with Ethan she talks about her time living in France, where working as a nanny she taught English to the two children she was babysitting. She also tells us about why she deleted all the social media apps off of her phone, how her perspective changed moving abroad and how she prevents losing her French skills while living in the USA, her opinions and strategies on raising her two children, how resourcefulness, passion and small wins have made her successful, her opinions on whether you need to speak English with a native. Vanessa is an avid reader, so you will learn the books that she recommends most to English learners. And so much more… so listen now! Show notes here.

Ethan, Andrea and Ollie are back together in the virtual studio to discuss words used in English that come from other languages in English. These are called loanwords and are very common in everyday (and not so everyday) speech. You’re also probably using some of these loanwords in your native language too. An important aspect of using these words is knowing how to pronounce them, as a few of them have special sounds. Also get ready to have some laughs as Ollie impresses Andrea and Ethan with his French accent! Show notes here.

This week's podcast is all about idioms! Part of being fluent in the language is being able to speak with idiomatic expressions when they're appropriate. For example, when someone asks you "How are you?", don't always fall back to the old "I'm fine, and you?" Think of ways you can add variety to your language. For example, you could say "as right as rain". Today, Andrea and Olli teach you weather related idioms, and in doing so they touch on a cultural aspect that has to do with British people and the weather. Can you guess what it is? Show notes here.
